The "Black River Gorges"
A National Park of 6,574 hectares, open to all for trekking purposes only. A
really complete excursion venue as it offers several tracks, from easy to hard,
starting in the relatively dry plains of Black River, up to the most humid
region of the "Macchabe Forest," at an altitude of 600 metres.
The vegetation is very rich and varied, counting several species of exotic
varieties of plants and trees, namely Ebony trees, the "bois de Natte," "Bois
Puant," "bois Mapou" as well as the Teckoma, Terminaya, Eucalyptus.
The fauna is also interesting; monkeys, stags, and wild boars can be encountered
but most attractive of all is the varieties of rare birds, the "Crescerelle" the
"Grosse Cateau Vert," the "Pigeon des Mares" as well as some "Paille-en-Queue,"
for which the "Black River Gorges" is their last natural sanctuary.
Along the track, a refreshing stream adds to the feeling of peace and
tranquillity with a pure and clear water to bathe in; although rather cold in
winter.
The Black River Gorges is worth visiting for the average and hard trekkers as
well as for the pure nature lovers and bird-watchers.
